Week 12 Summary

This week was a little hectic as my internet provider Comcast was frequently on and off again throughout the week. However once the internet was restored I was able to roll through the work mostly because I had it mapped out and finished while the internet was down allowing me the ability to simply post once it came back on. For the daily creates this week I got to be creative and create some interesting images of cats and dogs raining as well as looking up some former Capital players. The link for this weeks daily creates can be found here.

For this weeks main theme we had to create a tutorial of something we either struggled with or enjoyed doing from this semesters work. I ended up providing a tutorial on one of the assignments I created and participated in, spoiling a movies plot. I enjoyed this assignment and thought that others might struggle with it because there are a lot of moving parts in the assignment. My tutorial breaks down the steps of preparing and organizing the process of the assignment and provides helpful sources for further information. The link to the tutorial can be found here.

The assignments this week focused on mash-ups. For mine I tried to stay with the theme of Photoshop, since I started my free 7-day trial with Adobe Photoshop, I wanted to get my trials worth. My assignments stayed with the theme of mashing up characters and scenes from different movies or shows. I ended up combining the film Jaws with the film Titanic, I placed Marty Mcfly in the Fast and Furious universe and I further indulged in my sports addiction by combining my favorite teams. I had blast doing all of the mashup assignments and they really helped my learn more about Photoshop and visual arts.

Marty Mcfly/Fast and Furious

Favorite sports teams mashup

The last section of this weeks assignments probably allowed the class to be the most creative yet. The remix section allowed us to select an assignment and then randomly mix it with another assignment making a brand new and unique take on an assignment. In this I combined my character both times by adding him in a voting campaign image, also giving him a stache, and I to a trip to the past and revisited his car lust post and gave him a ride along partner in Waldo. Both of the remix assignments were fun and it was exciting to see what the assignment I selected would be remixed with.

Rocket voting ad/stache remix

Car lust/Waldo remix

Overall it was a great week for creativity and I loved being able to indulge in some of my favorite themes this week.

Car Lust [remixed]: Where’s Waldo? It.

For this remix I ended up using one of my previous assignments as the selected portion of the remix. The previous blog post detailing what the original assignment was can be found here. The original assignment had me describing my created characters car, which is a 1971 Chevelle SS. So after I decided that I would select that assignment to be remixed I clicked on the remix button and got the Where’s Waldo remix. Basically I had to incorporate Waldo into my image. So I went back to my previous assignment and I used the same picture and incorporated Waldo into the image. I couldn’t really hide him in the image so I figured I would just make him the car owner. Overall I enjoyed this remix as it allowed me to look back on previous assignments and allowed me to further experiment with Photoshop.

Go, Vote! [remixed]: ‘Stache It!

For this remixed assignment I had to combine an image that represented voting, basically encouraging people to go out and vote, with the “Stache It” assignment. So make things clear I had to make an image encouraging people to vote while adding a mustache somewhere. For this assignment I ended up incorporating my created character Rocket Richard, whom is based off of a real person. So I took an image of him from his younger days and threw a mustache on him while making the image seem like it encouraged citizens to go out and vote. It was probably one of the weirdest images Ive ever created and one of the oddest assignments Ive been tasked with doing. I used adobe Photoshop once again and It wasn’t to difficult of a task to complete. While it was the strangest assignment I had ever completed it was still fun to make and create.

Fast and Furious Meets Back to the Future

For this assignment I had to once again combine films together, however while I previously combined scenes together in my previous post this time I will be focusing on combining characters from different movies. This assignment was a little tricky because I wanted to place characters together that you as the viewer could say, “yeah I could them together”. So I started brainstorming ideas I happened to start thinking about Back to the Future, one of my all time favorite films, and I thought “I have to incorporate this movie somehow”. So I decided to pick Marty Mcfly, the main character from the film and I began thinking of characters I could place him with. The thought of the him and the  Delorean started making me think about films with cars, which instantly led me to the Fast and Furious franchise. I could honestly see the character Brian, form Fast and Furious, and Marty together having one crazy race. Again I used adobe Photoshop too create the image and I had a blast doing it. I really enjoy the creativeness the mashups promote and I enjoyed the three mashups I ended up making.

Jaws Caused the Titanic to Sink???

For this assignment I had to mix together two key scenes from two movies, basically combining them together to make an out of place scene occur but at the same time making it seem subtle. For this I ended combining everyone favorite tragic love story, the Titanic, with everyone’s favorite shark movie, Jaws. Every time I watch the Titanic I always ask myself “what about the sharks? I don’t know what would be scarier, drowning as the ship goes down or waiting for a shark to pick me off”. Even though the location of where the titanic sank is to cold for sharks, especially the Great White, Titanic survivors wouldn’t really have to worry about sharks unless they drifted further out. You may think that a great white shark in these waters would be extremely unlikely or even impossible, but Jaws isn’t your everyday shark. Just imagine, youre on the Titanic and having the time of your life when the boat hits something…is it an iceberg? NO its freaking Jaws. Good luck surviving the sinking cause that shark never stops eating.

Again for this assignment I used adobe Photoshop so similar beginner issues occurred. I did find myself enjoying this particular activity the most of the three mashup assignments I completed.

My Favorite Sports Teams

For this assignment I got to further indulge in my passion for sports related content. For this task I was instructed to combine the logos/mascots of my favorite sports teams in one unified image. The image is suppose to look natural and cohesive, meaning it shouldn’t look like I just threw a bunch of logos together. I used adobe Photoshop for this assignment and incorporated as many of my favorite sports teams as possible.  I ended up incorporating four of my favorite sports teams; the Washington Capitals, DC United, the Oakland Athletics and the Miami Dolphins. I really enjoyed this assignment and I had a blast creating it. It was my first time really playing with adobe Photoshop and it was a little challenging at first. Its a software that I think I need more time experimenting with before I can become great at Photoshop. Anyways I hope you enjoy this mix mashup of my favorite sports teams.

Week 12 Daily Creates

This week was pretty busy in terms of work and assignments so I guess due to that we were only instructed to complete two daily creates for this week. The two daily creates I created dealt with the number 25 and taking expressions literally. For the number 25 create I used a photo of one of my favorite former Washington Capitals players, number 25 Jason Chimera.

For the second daily create I took the expression, Its raining cats and dogs, literally and created this image of what it would truly look like if this expression came to life. I used SnapChat to help create the image.

Overall this week’s daily creates were unique and interesting. I always enjoy participating in the daily creates and this week was no different.

Discuss a Films Plot Tutorial

In the following post I will guide you through the process of designing, editing and creating a video about a film, or shows, overall plot. 1)The first thing that should be done in this assignment is selecting the story you want to discuss. I would suggest selecting a film/show you are extremely familiar with or one you’ve viewed recently as you’ll save time having to dig for information on key plot points. In my take on the assignment I decided to choose the film Big Daddy as I had seen the film many times and had previously watched it before doing the assignment.

2A)Once you’ve selected your story you then want to download a movie editor software. Depending on what computer you have will determine which software you can download. If money is of issue many of the sites for download offer free versions or free trials. For my project I used the free version of movavi video editor as it provided the tools and capabilities I needed for the assignment. Here’s a link to the site if you’re interested in downloading the software. Link Here.

2B)Once you have the video editing software of your choice downloaded you then should download an audio recording software as some of the video editing software doesn’t enable audio recording/editing. If the software you downloaded does have these capabilities then you can go ahead and skip to step 3, unless you want higher quality sound for your video. Just like the video editing software there are many different audio recording and editing software’s available online. The one I decided to install was the free audio software Audacity. Its a really easy to use software the allows you to record high quality audio and then filter the sound to your liking. A link to download Audacity can be found here.

3)After downloading the software your next step should be familiarizing yourself with the software. I know for me I didn’t give myslef the time to properly learn the in’s and out’s of the software which probably added to the time I spent on the assignment. The software I downloaded, Audacity and Movavi, each have tutorials available upon installing. Most other video and audio software’s also have tutorials available upon opening and running the software.

4)Once you have your software downloaded and you’ve become familiar with how to operate and use the software you then want to start the creative planning and organizing of your assignment. This is basically the step where you want to map out your video, highlight plot points, decide which visuals and scenes you want to incorporate, basically map out how the video will flow and play out. This is something that should be taken seriously as having a roadmap and an outline for an assignment like this helps you stay organized and on track.

5)Now is the step where you will gather clips or scenes from the film/show you have selected. You can either record the scenes yourself or you can elect to go with the option I chose which was using a free YouTube clip converter/downloader that allows you to download clips from YouTube videos which you can then use on whichever video software you elected to download. If you elect to go that route just make sure to credit the initial source of the video. Here is the site I used, y2mate, but there are several different sites you can use.

6)After you have the clips you want you can then upload them into your video editing software and align them in anyway you want. You can also add filters, distortion or edits to specific clips depending on what you’re doing. Once you’ve arranged the clips to your liking you then can add the audio file you record on your audio software, if you elected to go that route.

7)Once you’ve organized and arranged the clips and audio you can then save, export or upload your completed project.

Hopefully this tutorial helps you out with the assignment. Being that there are tons of video and audio editing software out there I wasn’t able to fully breakdown how to use each software being that each one is different. There are however many different tutorial videos on YouTube that breakdown more in-depth features of particular software’s. The intention of this tutorial is to give you a sort of checklist that helps you organize and map out the assignment. To see my take on the assignment and my finished version you can check out my blog post where I fully discuss my initial thoughts on the assignment. Blog post Link here.

Week 11 Summary

For this week we again stayed with video production as our theme, basically the in’s and out’s of the world of film and production. I for one am a person who loves film and video editing so this week was again a blast, however the download and upload time really drags out some of the assignments. For this weeks daily creates we went on a personal trip to the future as well as a return trip to the past as we looked back on some memories and looked forward to creating new ones. The breakdown of this weeks daily creates can be found here.

The assignments this week were also great as I got to once again create and edit together some awesome videos. I created a fake propaganda video revolving around war and fighting for our country. I created a trailer for my created character Rocket Richard which allows you to get a glimpse at his origin story. Finally I got to swede a scene from one of my favorite childhood movies, the Goonies. I edited and altered the Truffle Shuffle scene using one of my coworkers. In all I enjoyed of the assignments this week and hopefully I’ll get another chance to create and produce videos.

The Truffle Shuffle

For this assignment I had to take a scene from a show or film and change the way the scene played out or basically change it in someway. I decided that the film I would alter would be the Goonies, and the scene I would alter would be the truffle shuffle. Luckily I have a coworker who could perfectly display the skill that is the Truffle Shuffle and he was more then willing to do so. I found this to just be hilarious so I hope you enjoy it because it was so funny to record. Enjoy the new and improved modern Truffle Shuffle. I attempted to swede the Scene.
