Rocket and Sportsmanship

Have you ever seen a billboard promoting either a product, film or even a public service announcement and thought to yourself, “I can do better than that”. Well that’s exactly what I thought as I was able to create my very own billboard thanks to the awesome website PassItOn. The site allowed me to use a template and create my very own public service announcement. For this activity I wanted to once incorporate my created character, Rocket Richard. To do this a began brainstorming ideas of how I could create a public service announcement around the character. I thought of the traits and values Rocket exemplifies and settled in on sportsmanship, as this also pertains to hockey. The billboard features Rocket displaying sportsmanship qualities with fellow NHL players as well as large text that shows the boards overall meaning. The activity was fun and the process of creating it was fairly easy, minus the brainstorming. Overall I like the template I used and I am happy with the way mine turned out, as I could see something similar in real life.

Hockey in Space

For this design assignment I was instructed to add or place myself or others into a setting that they would seem out of place in. For this particular task I wanted to incorporate my created character, Rocket Richard. Being that my character is a hockey player I wanted to somehow place him and fellow players in an environment that they did not belong in. However, I didn’t want to just choose some random setting I wanted to somehow tie it to my characters lore. If you are familiar with my character Rocket then you know that he spent a lot of time as a child watching rockets at a nearby NASA testing facility that his late father worked at. This gave me the idea to place Rocket and these world class athletes in a place where rockets eventually go, space. The photo is that of several NHL players and Rocket as a young child playing hockey on the moon. I created this image in adobe Photoshop and I think overall it turned out fairly well. It was extremely difficult trimming the photos of the players. This was a necessary step in the sense that I could place them in the new setting  without any residue of the previous background. It took awhile but I am happy with the final product.

The Perseverance of Alex Ovechkin

If you watch professional hockey or live in the DMV area you’ve probably heard of Alex Ovechkin. He is a 14 year veteran and captain of the Washington Capitals. Throughout his 14 year career Ovechkin has placed himself along the greatest players to ever play the game. He has won several individual awards and has helped create a standard of regular season success in Washington. Prior to the spring of 2018 the Washington Capitals had never won the ultimate prize, the Stanley Cup. During the time Ovechkin has played on the Capitals, Known as the Ovie Era, the teams he led were almost always at the top of the standings and were annual Stanley Cup favorites. However ever spring the team would find new and excruciating ways to come up short in the postseason. Experts and the media would look at the teams failures and place large amounts of the blame on Ovechkin. They would make claims that he would never win a championship and that he wasn’t capable of achieving such a goal. Although he had the world against him he and his teammates kept working and finally broke through to secure the franchises and Ovechkin’s first Stanley Cup. Due to his perseverance he was able to achieve his ultimate goal and because of that I felt that his story would be perfect for this particular assignment. For this task I was instructed to create a motivational poster of my liking. I found a great website that allowed me to create one using a template that the site provided. The site and that template can be found here. I think that the over message and story I used for my poster worked out well and I think overall it turned out great.
